Palm Tree Christmas Lighting: A Houston & Gulf Coast Tradition
Palm trees and Christmas lights are a beloved Gulf Coast tradition. Here is how to light your palm trees professionally for a stunning holiday display.
Palm Tree Christmas Lighting: A Houston & Gulf Coast Tradition
There is something uniquely Texan about a palm tree wrapped in Christmas lights. Along the Gulf Coast — from Galveston Island to the Clear Lake waterfront to the beach communities of Bolivar Peninsula and Crystal Beach — illuminated palm trees are as much a part of the holiday season as candy canes and Christmas carols.
But palm tree lighting is not as simple as it looks. The height, the fronds, the trunk texture, and the exposure to Gulf Coast weather all create unique challenges that require the right equipment, the right technique, and the right lighting products. Here is everything you need to know about professional palm tree Christmas lighting.
Why Palm Trees Are Perfect for Holiday Lighting
Palm trees have a natural elegance that makes them ideal for holiday lighting. Their tall, straight trunks and dramatic frond canopies create a distinctive silhouette that looks stunning when illuminated. A well-lit palm tree is visible from a distance and creates a focal point for your entire holiday display.
In coastal communities like Galveston, Jamaica Beach, Crystal Beach, and Bolivar Peninsula, illuminated palm trees are a beloved neighborhood tradition. Driving through these communities during the holiday season and seeing row after row of glowing palm trees is one of the great pleasures of a Gulf Coast Christmas.
The Challenges of Palm Tree Lighting
Height
Most mature palm trees in the Houston and Galveston area are 20-40 feet tall. Some specimen palms in established neighborhoods can reach 50-60 feet or more. Safely reaching the top of a tall palm tree requires professional equipment — not a household ladder.
Our track lift equipment reaches up to 107 feet, which means we can safely light even the tallest palm trees in the region. We never ask our team to work at unsafe heights, and we never ask homeowners to climb their own palms.
Frond Wrapping
The fronds of a palm tree are one of its most distinctive features — and one of the most challenging to light properly. Wrapping individual fronds with mini lights creates a spectacular effect, but it requires patience, the right technique, and lights that can handle the movement of the fronds in the Gulf Coast breeze.
We use commercial-grade LED mini lights with flexible, weather-resistant wire that can handle the movement and exposure of palm frond lighting. Cheap consumer-grade lights will fail quickly in this application.
Weather Exposure
Palm trees in coastal communities are exposed to salt air, high humidity, and occasional high winds. The lighting products used on palm trees need to be rated for outdoor use and capable of handling Gulf Coast conditions. All of our lighting products are commercial-grade and designed for outdoor use in demanding environments.
Lighting Techniques for Palm Trees
Trunk Wrapping
The most common and effective technique for palm tree lighting is trunk wrapping — spiraling strings of lights around the trunk from the base to the top. Done well, this creates a glowing column of light that is visible from a distance and looks beautiful from every angle.
The key to a good trunk wrap is consistent spacing and tension. Lights that are too loose will sag and look uneven. Lights that are too tight can damage the bark. Our team has wrapped thousands of palm trunks and knows exactly how to achieve a clean, professional result.
Frond Lighting
For a more dramatic effect, we can wrap individual fronds with mini lights in addition to the trunk. This creates a full, glowing canopy that is spectacular at night. Frond lighting is more labor-intensive than trunk wrapping, but the result is worth it.
Canopy Lighting
For very large palms, we can suspend lights through the canopy to create a glowing effect from below. This technique works especially well for palms with a wide, spreading canopy.
Color Choices for Palm Trees
Palm trees look beautiful in almost any color, but some palettes work especially well:
Warm white is the most popular choice for palm trees. The soft, golden glow complements the natural color of the trunk and fronds and creates an elegant, sophisticated look.
Multicolor is a festive, playful option that works especially well in beach communities where bold, colorful displays are the norm. A multicolor palm tree is unmistakably holiday.
Blue and white has a cool, tropical quality that works beautifully on coastal properties. The blue-white combination evokes moonlight on the water.
Red and white creates a candy cane effect that is cheerful and eye-catching.
Gold and warm white is a luxurious combination that works well on upscale properties and commercial venues.
